Koh Oknha Tey Island, Cambodia Guide

Koh Oknha Tey Island, CambodiaRiver (Mekong)

Koh Oknha Tey Island is a small and enchanting island off the coast of Cambodia, famed for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush tropical vegetation. Whether you're into swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on a pristine beach, this hidden gem has something for every traveler.

Location & Transportation

Koh Oknha Tey Island — better known as Silk Island — is a peaceful river island sitting in the middle of the Mekong, about 15–18 km north of Phnom Penh. You reach it by a short car ferry crossing from the mainland, and the ride over the water is a lovely first taste of rural Cambodian life. Once on the island, getting around is easy with options like tuk-tuks, motorbike taxis, and bicycle rentals — I love pedaling the quiet lanes past stilted houses, fruit orchards, and clattering silk looms.

Nearby Lodging

There are a handful of low-key accommodations on and around the island, from simple homestays and guesthouses to more comfortable rooms back in Phnom Penh, a short ferry and drive away. I love the idea of an overnight homestay here, waking up to the sound of the river and the rhythmic clack of weavers starting their day.

Nearest Airport

Most visitors fly into Phnom Penh International Airport, which is roughly an hour’s drive-and-ferry trip from the island. It’s a convenient gateway to this peaceful retreat.

Sightseeing

Exploring Koh Oknha Tey Island is a delight, especially if you love traditional crafts and slow river scenery. I always find something new around every corner. Here are a few highlights:

  • Watch silk weavers at work in Chong Koh village, where you can follow the whole process from silkworm and cocoon to dyeing, spinning, and the finished scarf on the loom.
  • Stroll or cycle the shaded lanes that weave past stilted wooden houses, vegetable plots, and fruit orchards.
  • Take in the gentle Mekong River views — this is a wonderfully calm escape from the bustle of Phnom Penh.
  • Wander through local markets and family workshops where you can pick up handwoven silk, textiles, and unique souvenirs.

Tours & Excursions

There are several exciting excursions that extend your adventure beyond the island:

  • Explore Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s lively capital just downriver, with its Royal Palace, riverside promenade, and buzzing markets.
  • Visit the Chong Koh silk-weaving workshops for a hands-on look at one of Cambodia’s most treasured crafts.
  • Take a leisurely boat or kayak trip along this stretch of the Mekong to spot village life along the banks.
  • Discover the sobering history at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Choeung Ek Killing Fields near Phnom Penh.
  • For a grand excursion, consider a day trip to Tonle Sap Lake to see the fascinating floating villages and rich biodiversity.
  • If time allows, Angkor Wat is a must-see in Cambodia, though it’s a longer journey from the island.

It‘s a good idea to compare shore excursion costs between what your cruise line offers and options like Viator and GetYourGuide. They often provide lower prices and include customer reviews and ratings to help you choose the best option. They may also offer more more flexible cancellation or rescheduling policies than those available through your cruise line. However, while booking independently might give you more variety and potentially better rates, be mindful of your schedule - cruise line excursions are typically coordinated to match your ship‘s schedule with guaranteed pick-up and drop-off times.

There is also a great resource for finding local guides at Tours by Locals. Tours by Locals connects you with local guides who can help you plan a private personal tour, guide you, and get you back to your ship on time. You can also check out Rome2Rio for local transportation options. It is a great resource for finding how to get from one place to another, including public transportation, taxis, ferries, and more.

Shopping

I enjoy stopping by the island’s workshops and local markets. Here you can find delightful handwoven silk scarves, textiles, and souvenirs that capture the charm of Cambodian culture — often bought straight from the artisans who made them. It’s the perfect way to bring home a little piece of your adventure.

Dining

Koh Oknha Tey Island is known for its friendly locals and delicious cuisine. Whether you’re craving fresh river fish, traditional Khmer dishes, or a simple home-cooked meal at a family-run spot, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Enjoying a relaxed lunch by the Mekong is one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon on the island.

Culture & Local Events

The island is as rich in culture as it is in natural beauty. Here are a few tips to help you dive into local life:

  • Khmer is the primary language here, though you’ll often find that friendly locals can help in English.
  • While the official currency is Cambodian Riel (KHR), US dollars are widely accepted in many places, especially in local markets and restaurants.
  • Local festivals and cultural events are common, offering a glimpse into Cambodia’s vibrant traditions. Keep an eye out for events featuring traditional music, dance, and art.
  • Daily life on the island follows a laid-back rhythm. Most local establishments adjust their hours to the tropical climate, so it’s always a good idea to ask for up-to-date information on opening times.

Local Events

  • Occasional festivals celebrating traditional Khmer music, dance, and crafts create a lively atmosphere.
  • Market days often feature special events and performances that showcase local talent and heritage.

Safety & Awareness

  • Stay hydrated and use plenty of sun protection—the tropical sun can be strong.
  • Respect local customs and dress modestly when exploring cultural sites.
  • Always keep an eye on your personal belongings, especially in crowded market areas.
