I love how you can soak in the historical ambience just by strolling along the water. For getting around, taxis and local buses are easy to find, and if you’re coming in on a river cruise, you’ll usually have a convenient shuttle service from nearby centers.

If you’re flying in, the closest major airport is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, located roughly 35–40 km away. It’s very accessible by taxi or public transport, making your arrival or departure smooth and stress-free.
Sightseeing
Alkmaar truly captivates with its blend of historic charm and modern vibrancy. Some of my favorite spots to explore include:
- Cheese Market: A centuries-old tradition dating back to 1365, held on the Waagplein every Friday from 10am to 1pm between late March and late September (plus Tuesday evenings in July and August), where you can watch traditional cheese weighing and sample at nearby shops.
- Historic City Center: Wander the narrow, cobbled streets lined with 17th-century buildings and picturesque canals.
- St. Laurenskerk: This stunning Gothic church offers a peaceful glimpse into the city’s religious heritage.
- Local Museums: Visit the Alkmaar Museum to learn about the city’s fascinating past, or catch a performance at the Stadsschouwburg Alkmaar for a taste of local culture.
